You’ve got to be kidding??

I was lookin at the Softaculous  installer ( a super duper install script, I might add) and found something that pulled at my heart. I used to run a BBS system using Remote Access BBS a loooong time ago. I ran 2 programs, Trade Wars and Yankee Trader (Al Davenport, Al’s Cabin BBS)

There’s a game script called ‘Black Nova Traders’….So…I installed it on one of the servers…..and was suddenly thrown back 15 or more years…You know…I hadda do it ;) Yep… installed it…got the bug …and calling up my old enemies to come and get me ;)

Let the games begin !!

As for Softaculous…we’ll start offering it on all the hosting servers. It has 131 scripts that can be installed in a few clicks and you can demo the scripts before you install them. It’s faster than Fantastico, has almost 2-3 times the scripts and keeps them ALL up-to-date. I’m impressed. You can find Softaculous in your control panel, under Software. If you currently have scripts installed with Fantastico, it will import these into Softaculous. I give 2 thumbs for this script installer. GO check it out !!

Softaculous…

We will be adding  Softaculous autoinstaller to our standard web hosting features. We’ll continue to use fantastico for now, but Softaculous offers more script options and keeps scripts more up-to-date. You’ll find Softaculous in your control panel under “Software/Services”

Install Scripts on the fly

What’s an Auto Installer ? An Auto Installer can be used to install scripts and software without you having to upload files. You don’t need to create any database for the scripts and go through the complex procedures of installing these software packages!

Search engine optimization and Ranking..

Monday Feb 8, 2010 | No Comments »

There is lots of buzz regarding “how to get on the first page of Google”.

There are a lots of “SEO Optimization” companies who claim they can do that. I just ask them how well their own web site is ranked, and then they stop pestering me for business. If they aren’t on the first page of Google when I search “Search engine optimization” or “Web site SEO company”…etc…then they are obviously wasting my time.

You can optimize your web site for free with a few easy steps:

1) Choose a web site name relevant to what your site is about.

2) Page titles: use the <title>Put a relevant page title here </title>

3) Description: use the meta name= “description” content=”blah blah put a brief description of the web page here”

4) Name your files “widget-marketing.html” instead of “main.html”, “secondpage.html”…etc

Sign up for Web Master tools at Google. There is a plethora of information presented by Google on what to change, and what to do. The info is free, and there is no need to spend $$$ on a “Optimization” service who CANNOT guarantee that you’ll be “Number #1″ at Google. It’s a numbers game. There are just too many web sites to compete with, and too many “SEO” companies.

That’s the way I see it, anyway.

Boonex Dolphin Hosting. Yeah….we can do that.

Monday Feb 1, 2010 | No Comments »

UPDATE: We’re happy with our testing and have no issues hosting the Boonex Dolphin community script. Since we’re in an especially good mood, we’re going to add it to everyone’s cPanel over the next few weeks. Bonus! ;)

————————————————————————————————–
We had some inquiries. We’ll be looking at it and will check to see if it’s something we can host. Probably and most likely, yes. We hate saying “No” to people who are our clients and potential clients For those who asked, check back in few days after we’ve played around with it ;)

Last 3 servers…

Wednesday Jan 20, 2010 | No Comments »

Well, it’s been fun. We’re moving our last 3 un-racked servers to the server rack today. Servers minou, admin and babydoll have been flushed clean of web sites and are currently powered down and stacked, leaning up against a wall, ready to be re-deployed. Those clients web sites that used to live on those servers are now scattered across “Cessna”, “SkyHawk”,”Pilatus” and “Pitou”. We moved people without any downtime. Not to shabby ;)

Minou, BabyDoll and admin will be powered back up later today, in their new home, ready for new hosting clients.

A big thanks go to our hosting clients as they weathered our server moves.

Changes to our shared hosting plans..

Thursday Jan 14, 2010 | No Comments »

The economy is bad, money is tight,
but people still want a web site.

We used to charge months in advance,
There’s been a change of plans..

Let’s be blunt,
We’ll charge you $4.95…up front.

—————————————-

Ok…I’m not much of a poet and my pentameter or whatever it’s called is probably bad ;)

Here’s the deal:

$4.95 up front gets you online. We are doing away with “several months in advance” stuff for personal plans. If you got $4.95 per month and a paypal…. you’re online !

Resolvers…and servers

Wednesday Jan 13, 2010 | No Comments »

Our servers need to look up websites and contact mailservers from time to time.
We’ve been using OpenDns.com to provide DNS information to our servers.

Lately, it seems that OpenDns.com’s info has been getting a little outdated and behind, and we’ve had some problems with servers trying to deliver mail to incorrect mail servers. It eventually sorts itself out, but OpenDns.com doesn’t seem to be caught up all the time.

As an experiment, we’ve switched over 5 of our servers to use the new Google DNS .
So far, we’ve had less problems.

Seinfeldonline.com

Monday Jan 11, 2010 | No Comments »

No, we don’t host Seinfeldonline.com

Once upon a time, we did. We used to have another brand name while starting out ..we were “Pro-Web-host.com” and when we hosted the SeinfeldOnline.com site. My friend owned the site and then gave it away.

The problem is that our links on the site are still there, but the site is incredible slow. We don’t host it and emails to have our links removed have gone un-answered.

So..if you are here because you clicked an old link on Seinfeldonline.com, we DON’T host it ;) If we did, it would load a LOT faster ;)

Thanks.

The trouble with “Domains for life” marketing..

Monday Jan 11, 2010 | No Comments »

Being swayed by cheap web hosts that offer a free domain name?

A reseller of ours has run into a snag with a client who wants to transfer an existing site to him, but the current host holds the ownership of the domain name and passwords. Thus, no transfer.

A “free domain” for life deal means the host will pay the domain fees at a registrar for as long as you continue hosting with them. If you leave, they keep the domain name (they own it, remember?) and that is the current problem with our reseller client. The old host won’t transfer or otherwise give up the domain name.

If you want hosting, buy your domain name and then look for reliable hosting. If you own the domain name, then all you need to do is change your nameservers at the registrar and move to a new host.

Protect your domain name. Buy it.
That’s the way I see it, anyway.

Web site migration…

Monday Jan 11, 2010 | No Comments »

We are currently moving a few sites from the servers minou and babydoll to servers located in our private server rack in Montreal.

We expect this to be finished up in the next few days. We’re sorting out some problems with AOL regarding email, as they don’t seem to like new IP addresses. We are jumping through their hoops and going thru the process. Users who absolutely need the ability to send email to AOL’s users will be remaining behind on the old servers until we get our AOL approval. Once we have that for our new IP’s, we’ll move them over and then take the out-of-rack servers offline and rack them. They will be available for dedicated server lease or hosting. Servers minou and babydoll have been approved by AOL ages ago ;)
